Algae

So we've been researching Algae. Here is a nice article going into a little history and some specs about why people are excited about it. Please comment. And please review this for information on the test.

  1. I think it would be pretty crazy if cars burned earned algae in just 2 years. It seems like you get a lot more energy outta the same space with algae.

  2. 20,000 gallons per acre of algae per year is an outrageous amount, if we could get cars to burn this then it would save so much money. Algae would burn way cleaner than gasoline does also. Hopefully in the near future scientists will come up with a solution.

  3. I think it's really cool that within 2 years we could be using algae. I think it'd be awesome if we could use this as a biodiesel because it burns clean. It also doesn't pose the problem that corn would on inflating prices because it can produce 20,000 gallons per acre a year - that's good. It's also cool at how many different types of fuel you can produce from algae alone. For example there's Biodiesel, biobutanol, biogasoline, methane, ethanol, SO (Straight vegtable oil), and many more. I'ts also a very good idea because once the oil from the algae is extracted you can sell the remainding plant for ethanol production or animal feed - nothing goes to waste which is awesome!

  4. I think that algae fuel is a good idea, and that cutting it when oil prices went down again and cutting back on that was a bad decision. Thge fact that it can produce 20,000 per acre per year is crazy! I thought that it was interesting to grow the algae vertical, since the sun light only penatrates 1 inch of the algae.

  5. Is a really good idea but is really expensive and the production is awesome but to produce it the waste of energy is very high and also the use of water but instead of this I think algae for biodiesel or switch grass for ethanol can be the best solutions.

  6. I think its really cool how algae can grow on top of eachother, which saves a little bit of land and per acre it can produce 20,000 which is great. And because there's so much of it, itll be great to use instead of corn so prices dont rise.

  7. i think it is amazing how much algea we have and how it can grow on top of eachother however i think it would cost way to much plus it the would be alot of extra waste. it is a clean fuel sorce and we should switch to alternitive fuels like this if we all want a clean atmosfer in the futer

  8. I thought it was amazing how scientists estimated that the country at the time could be fueled by what is produced by 15,000 square miles of algae farms.

  9. I think this a very good power supply for cars and could be the much needed kick Americans need to break their dependency on oil.

  10. I think its really dumb that algae was started in 1978, but then it died out just because oil prices went down. If we had kept researching it, it could be huge right now, but its only at a start right now. Being able to get 20,000 gallons of oil out of each acre of algae is ginormous, while corn can only get 18 gallons per year per acre.

  11. Algae fuel is an amazing idea because it is clean and cheap. It doesn't take much to grow and none of the algae would go to waste. Every part of the algae would be used. Plus it seems crazy to me that in two years this could be our new fuel.

  12. algae is a great fuel sorce you can get 5000 to 20000 gals of oil from one squar acare of algae but a acare is very hard to come by but you can harvest every 5-10 days

  13. if we were able to burn ALL the algae in 2 years that'd be sweet. we could probly get a ton of free energy.. and everyone likes free stuff... so thats cool.

  14. if we are creating algae, why not burn some off to power our cars and such, where else will we put it?

  15. Algae is great. It grows fast, throws off lots of fuel (oil), and is cheap. This is for sure going to be one of the biggest biofuels of the future.

  16. Algae all the way!!!! its cheap, clean and grows pretty fast. we could use it to extract the oil from it for fuel, why not start using it.?
Algae is a great source of fuel

  17. Put it this way. the stuff is green, it helps get rid of carbon dioxide, its a great biofuel, its cheap and at our finger tips. what could possibly go wrong?

  18. we could fuel our whole entire country for just 20000 sq miles of pond which we could do in the desert so that would completely elinminate our whole entire supply of oil coming from the middleaster and we could be self reliant also it would be beneficial because it seems like a renewable source
